Submit your site to search engines - how often should you do it?

We have all seen and been tempted by those websites out there that promise to submit your site to thousands of search engines a month with claims that doing this will greatly increase your website's traffic and page rank.  The truth is that most of most of these search engines they submit your site to are rubbish and unused; and the only thing you really gain out of this type of service is alot of spam in your inbox!

Submitting your site to search engines is only a small step to increasing your websites visability and it is hardly the magical method of driving visitors to your site.  Your main focus should be optimising your sites search engine compatability, otherwise known as "SEO" - Search Engine Optimisation.

I will not go in to the in's and out's of SEO in this article as there is simply too much to cover on the topic of SEO and I dont want to go off topic, but once you have SEO down pat you will start to see your website's online presence grow significantly.

Once you have submitted your site, you shouldnt really need to keep re-submitting your website frequently as the search engine spiders automatically crawl your website periodically anyway.  I generally only re-submit my sites if I have added a huge amount of content that I want crawled as soon as possible or if I have changed my keyword data or meta tags.

Once you have built your website and set up hosting, the next step is to market your website. There are lots of various effective internet marketing strategies available such as SEO (search engine optimization), PPC (Pay-Per-Click), Affiliate Marketing, E-mail Marketing, Social Media Marketing to name the most popular ones. If you are new you can certainly learn by yourself or contact an online marketing company to take care of all your online marketing needs. Just make sure that you hire an experienced one that have been around many years and that can prove their results. Also ask for references and what kind of ranking and traffic results that they have achieved for other clients as well as themselves.
